Whether you’re a seasoned gardener looking to replace an old hose or a first-time homeowner just getting started in yard care, finding a hose that meets your needs is crucial for keeping your garden and lawn green and flourishing.
There are many different features to look for when you’re buying a hose. You’ll want something durable, flexible, and suited to your specific needs. Find the perfect garden hose for your outdoor space with Blain’s Farm & Fleet.
There are a few different types of garden hoses to choose from, each serving a unique purpose. However, all types are great for watering your lawn and garden.
You can find garden hoses made from a variety of different materials. They’re typically made with rubber, vinyl, or a combination of the two.
You want to find a hose that’s flexible, but not too flexible. Flexible hoses are good for moving around your yard and storing. But if they’re too flexible, they will kink very easily.
You’ll also want to know the layers (also known as plies) of the hose. The more plies, the stronger the hose. Household hoses typically range from one to six plies, and they can sometimes have a mesh layer on the outside for extra protection.
The hose fitting, or coupling, is what connects the hose to the faucet. It’s typically made from plastic or brass.
A typical garden hose will have a diameter of 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, or 3/4-inch. The larger the diameter, the more water your hose will deliver.
Hoses with larger diameters are typically only necessary for heavy-duty jobs. The average homeowner won’t need the extra water flow for their lawn or garden.
You’ll also need to consider the garden hose length, as they can range from 10 feet up 100 feet or more. Choosing the right length really comes down to the distance between the water faucet and the area you’ll be watering. You don’t need 100 feet of hose if your garden is only 20 feet away.
The longer your hose is, the harder it will be for you to move it around your yard. And the water pressure also won’t be as powerful from a longer hose.
To determine how long of a hose you need, we recommend finding the furthest part of your yard that you’ll need it to reach. Measure the distance from this point to your faucet or water supply where you’ll hook up your hose. Plan to get a hose that’s just slightly longer than that distance.
You can also connect smaller hoses if you need to only occasionally water at long distances.
Don’t forget your hose nozzles and accessories! There are a variety to choose from, depending on your specific watering needs.
Hose nozzles allow you to change the pressure and style of spray. You can also use them to adjust the amount of water that gets released. And they can also extend your reach.
Garden hose reels are essential for storing your hose and keeping it from getting twisted. Closed versions can also help prolong your hose’s life, as they will protect it from the elements.
We recommend storing your hose and hose reel in your garage or shed during the winter season. This will help make them last much longer.
At Blains’ Farm & Fleet, we understand that having a lush garden and lawn is your pride and joy. That’s why we carry everything you need to keep them looking their best.
