Tips for Using Spray Paint
Spray painting is an easy and efficient way to transform any DIY project. Follow these tips for using spray paint from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.

1. Choose the Right Location

When you’re working with spray paint you need to be in a well-ventilated and open area. It’s also important you have enough space to work with, depending on the size of your project.

2. Prepare and Protect

Depending on your project, you may need to protect the work space with cardboard or a drop cloth. You’ll also need to prepare the surface of whatever you’re painting. Most surfaces will need to be sanded, cleaned and dried before you apply any paint. This will help the paint adhere easily and quickly. You may also need to prime the surface, again depending on your personal project.

3. Follow Directions

Follow the directions on the paint can. The directions should include the spraying distance and drying times. You need to follow both of these for the best results. If you spray too close, you’ll end up with runny paint and an uneven finish. If you don’t follow drying times you might end up handling tacky or sticky spray paint. You also run the risk of getting paint on other surfaces.

4. Test the Spray Paint

Before you start on the actual project, test the spray paint on a piece of scrap material that’s the same as your actual project. This will help give you an idea of what the finished project will look like, and any adjustments you’ll need to make to get the desired finish.

5. Spray in Thin Coats

When you go to apply the spray paint, spray in thin coats. Sweep across the surface and end the coat off to the side. Completely coat the project before adding a second coat. This will help with keeping the color consistent. Read the directions on the can for the number of coats, and how much time should be left in between coats of paint.

Using spray paint is an easy way to refinish or transform any project. At Blain’s Farm & Fleet, you’ll find everything you need to get started.
