Gear up to get out on the ice with this list of must-have items from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.
Layering and wearing the right gear for ice fishing is a must if you plan on braving the cold weather all day. Starting with a moisture-wicking base layer will keep you warm and dry all day long.
Snow bibs add protection from the cold and snow. Many bibs even come with hand-warming pockets. In addition to bibs, ice fishing jackets or parkas are a must.
Finally, ice fishing gloves or mittens, a winter hat, and even a balaclava will protect your hands and face from the winter cold.
Next, you’ll want an ice fishing shelter. There are a few factors to consider when choosing an ice fishing shelter: portability, capacity, material, and style. Read through our ice fishing shelter buyer’s guide for a complete look at your different options.
Shelters aren’t required for ice fishing. But with them, you’ll be able to get out on the ice a lot more during the season.
Now, we start getting into the fishing gear itself. In order to make your fishing hole in the ice, you’ll need an ice auger. You have a choice between a hand auger and a power auger.
If you’re fishing in an ice shelter or shanty, you’ll want to use an electric or hand auger. This is because a gas-powered auger gives off fumes.
A gas-powered auger, however, will cut deeper holes in the ice and won’t take as much muscle to operate as a hand auger. It all comes down to what you’re comfortable using on the ice.
You may also want to have an ice scoop or ice skimmer on hand. They will help you clear ice and slush from the hole you create.
In addition to augers, shelters, and clothing, you’ll need actual ice fishing tackle, too. Depending on which ice fishing technique you use, your gear needs might differ.
Below are some common items you’ll need for ice fishing.
Many ice fishers use jigging rods with short lengths of 18 to 24 inches. The short length makes them easy to use in an ice fishing shelter.
Spinning reels are another popular option.
Your bait needs will differ depending on what type of fish you plan on catching. You also have the option to use live bait, if you’d like.
A tip-up is a device that signals when a fish grabs onto your line. A flag springs up (or “tips” up) when the fish hits.
