Learn about car rims and other parts of a wheel assembly with Blain’s Farm & Fleet.
So you’ve learned about what tires you need for your vehicle, but have you ever wondered about what keeps those tires on your vehicle? Car rims are the most outer edge of a wheel. They’re where your tires are actually attached. The inner part of your car tire is attached to the rim. You’ll often hear people use “rims,” and “wheels,” interchangeably, where decorative wheels are called rims. Some people may also say “tire,” when they actually mean wheel. Knowing the actual parts of a wheel assembly can save you (and your auto mechanic) a lot of trouble.
Tire – When we’re talking about tires, we’re referring to just the rubber part of the wheel. The tire is the part of the wheel that makes contact with the road. It’s the cushioned support that keeps you driving safely on the road. Finding the right size tire and the right size car rims will keep you safe on the road and help keep your car in good shape.
Rim – The rim is the metal part that the rubber tire is wrapped around. Car rims are typically made from steel or aluminum. They can range in size and shape, with your standard plastic hubcap-covered rims to showy “spinners.”
Hub – The hub is the center part of a wheel that keeps it attached to the axle and the braking system. Brake rotors and hub assemblies sit against the wheel hub.
Hubcap – A hubcap covers at least the hub, if not the entire rim. It’s used to not only protect the hub and fasteners from dirt and moisture, but it can also be a decorative element. They’re typically made of plastic.
Wheel Weights – Weights can be added to a wheel to balance the wheel assembly and the tire. Wheel weights can be installed on the outside or inside of a wheel. They’re put on with a self-adhesive, or can be clipped or taped on to the wheel.
Valve Stem – The valve stem is where you can check your tire pressure, and fill up your tire with air. There are rubber snap-in valves, as well as high-pressure snap-ins and high-pressure metal clamp-ins.
