What You’ll Need

To create your plastic pumpkin planter, you’ll need the following materials:

Choosing the Right Paint

When selecting spray paint, opt for a type that adheres well to plastic surfaces. Rust-Oleum offers paints specifically designed for plastic, ensuring a smooth and long-lasting finish. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your color choice.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Select and Prepare Your Pumpkin

Choose a sturdy plastic pumpkin that can withstand outdoor weather. Larger pumpkins can accommodate more soil and bigger mums. We used a standard plastic jack-o’-lantern pail, which was big enough to hold medium-sized mums.

Using a drill fitted with a 1/4-inch drill bit, carefully make a few drainage holes at the bottom of the pumpkin. This ensures water can drain properly, preventing root rot.

Always wear safety glasses when using a drill to protect your eyes from flying debris. If you’re new to using power tools, take your time and work slowly to maintain control and accuracy.

Step 2: Spray Paint the Pumpkin

Now that your pumpkin has drainage holes, it’s time to give it a fresh coat of paint. Choose colors that complement your décor or taste—classic warm colors for fall, gold, or a even a bold metallic are all good options. We used the Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Matte Black for a more spooky, Halloween vibe.

Wipe down the pumpkin with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. This will help the paint stick better and give it a smoother finish. Allow the pumpkin to dry completely before painting.

Set up your workspace in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Lay down some newspaper or a drop cloth to protect surfaces from paint overspray.

Shake the spray paint can well before use. Hold the can about 12 inches away from the pumpkin and apply the paint in light, even coats. It’s better to apply several thin layers rather than one thick coat to avoid drips and ensure even coverage. Allow each coat to dry for the recommended time before applying the next.

Tip: If you get any spray paint on your skin, you can easily remove it by scrubbing with olive oil and salt and washing with Dawn Dish Soap.

Step 3: Add Some Extra Details

If you’re feeling creative and want to add patterns or designs to your pumpkin, use stencils or painter’s tape to create clean lines and shapes. You can also add additional colors for a more intricate design. We used the Rust-Oleum White Decorative Marble Effect Spray Paint to create a a spider web look. Just make sure each layer of paint is dry before adding new elements.

Step 4: Plant the Mums

With your pumpkin painted and dry, it’s time to add the plant. Mums are a classic choice for fall, but you can choose any seasonal flowers you’d like.

Fill the pumpkin about halfway with potting soil. Then, gently remove the mum plant from its nursery pot, being careful not to damage the roots. Place it in the pumpkin. Fill in any gaps with additional soil, pressing lightly around the plant to secure it in place.

Water the plant thoroughly, allowing the excess water to drain out of the holes you drilled earlier.

Care Tips for Mums

  • Placement: Position your planter where it will receive plenty of sunlight. Fall mums thrive in bright environments, so a sunny front porch or garden spot is ideal.
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Regularly check moisture levels and adjust watering as needed, especially after rain.
  • Fertilization: To prolong blooming, consider a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants.
