Secure Your Doors & Windows

Home Security Tips
There are some simple steps you can take to make your home more safe and secure. Follow our helpful home security tips to protect you and your family.

Start with the doors. Installing a deadbolt can be one more step a thief has to break through in order to enter your home. A sturdy deadbolt provides extra security to your entrances. Two locks to pick are better than one. There are a variety of bolts and locks that are great additions to any home for increased home security.

You can also increase your home security with window locks. Many burglars don’t even make a forced entry, they simply find an unlocked window to crawl through. Window locks still let you keep the window open a few inches while staying secure. Be sure to check window locks in your home. If they’re broken, you need to replace or fix them.

Install Motion Sensor Lights

Installing motion sensor lights can be another great way to scare off any night time intruders. The lights turn on automatically when someone passes them, deterring intruders. Install the lights near each entry point of your home. Be sure to replace any burnt out bulbs.

Install Indoor Light Timers

One of the most convenient times for a break-in is while you’re at work or on vacation. You can make it look like someone’s home with a timer set to turn on your lights or TVs.

Install an Alarm Security System

Alarm security systems can be pricey to install and maintain, but are worth the investment. Companies like ADT install systems throughout the country. If you don’t want to spend the money on an alarm system, you can at least put security signs up. Even a “Beware of Dog,” sign can help. This creates the illusion that you have a security system, deterring burglars.

Use a Safe or Security Chest

There are all kinds of options for protecting your valuables and important papers. You can install a hidden wall safe. A fire safe will keep both burglars and fire out. There are also small security boxes that you can hide in your home. When not in use, keep passports, social security cards and any other valuables in a safe.

Be Smart with Keys & Garage Door Opener Remotes

Keep your house key, car key and garage door opener remote in a smart spot. While it’s easy to drop your keys by the door, you’re also making it easier for someone to steal your car. It’s a good idea to keep your keys hidden in a drawer, or keep them near you on a bedside table. It’s also a good idea to rethink the hidden house key you most likely have outside. Burglars know where the typical hiding spots are. To improve your home security, give your spare key to a trusted neighbor.
