What You’ll Need

Step 1: Empty Your Dishwasher

First thing’s first, ensure your dishwasher is completely empty. This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how often this step is overlooked.

Step 2: Clean the Filter

Remove the bottom rack to access the dishwasher filter. Depending on your model, you may need to twist or unlock it.

Gently wash the filter under running water, using a soft brush to remove any stuck-on food pieces. This is crucial for preventing clogs and ensuring efficient operation.

Step 3: Wipe Down the Interior

Using a damp cloth or sponge, wipe the interior surfaces of your dishwasher. Make sure you get the walls, the door, and the utensil racks.

Pay special attention to the rubber seals, where residue often accumulates.

Step 4: Deodorize with Vinegar

Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with one cup of white vinegar, and place it on the top rack. Run a hot water cycle with the dishwasher empty, except for the bowl of vinegar.

Vinegar is excellent for removing any lingering odors and breaking down residual buildup.

Step 5: Add a Baking Soda Rinse

After the vinegar cycle, sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short hot water cleaning cycle.

Baking soda helps in further deodorizing your dishwasher and leaves it with a sparkling finish.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you notice your dishes aren’t coming out as clean as they should, check the spray arms for clogs. And ensure you’re loading the dishwasher correctly. Sometimes, the simplest adjustments can significantly impact performance.

We recommend doing this deep clean of your dishwasher once per month. In the meantime, it’s a good idea to regularly use a dishwasher cleaner to help prevent buildup of food particles and soap scum.
