Learn how to wrap gifts in a variety of shapes with these simple methods.

Regardless of the occasion, if you are expected to bring a gift, you want it to look nice. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Wrapping items that are oddly shaped or fragile can lead to a lot of frustration when the paper tears, or the finished product comes out looking like a disaster.

Luckily, you can make even the most obscure gift look beautiful in wrapping paper by using these easy gift wrapping methods from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.

Items You’ll Need:

Method 1: Box-Less Gift Bundle

This method of wrapping works best for when boxes aren’t available. Or if you need to wrap soft items, such as socks, blankets, or pillows.

Steps:

  1. Using scissors or a utility knife, cut a piece of wrapping paper that is two to three inches larger than the object you’re wrapping (both horizontally and vertically).
  2. Wrap the paper around the object, width-wise, and secure with tape. It should look like a tube that is open on both ends
  3. Flatten both the top and bottom ends of the tube. Fold over one of the edges by one inch, and then fold it over again to hide the cut edge. Secure it with tape, and repeat the process for the other side.
  4. Optional: Hole punch the folded edges and string through a piece of ribbon or twine, and make a bow for a finishing touch.

Feel free to get creative! Add more holes to the edges for a woven look, or add additional embellishments to advance the design of your gift.

Method 2: Homemade Gift Bag/Pouch

This method works nicely for gifts that don’t come in a box and/or possess an odd shape, including baked goods. You can make these gift bags to fit any size present. Simply adjust the measurements accordingly.

Steps:

  1. Cut a piece of wrapping paper in a rectangular shape, making sure the size will fit the gift. For this example, we will use a 6-1/2″ by 11-1/2″ piece.
  2. Fold the left and right sides towards the center (by about 3-1/4″), and secure with tape.
  3. Fold the bottom edge up by one inch, and then fold it again to hide the cut edge. Secure with tape.
  4. Insert the gift into the bag/pouch.
  5. Using a hole punch, make a hole in the top edge of the pouch, about 3/4″ from the top. You can center it or punch multiple holes, depending on your preference.
  6. String through ribbon or twine, and tie a loop to allow you to secure the pouch and hang it up.

If you would rather not use a hole punch, you can simply fold over the top edge, and secure it shut with tape or staples. Feel free to get creative, and add additional decorations to personalize your gift.

Alternative Options

  • If these methods are unsuitable for your situation, there are other ways to present your gifts. For example, attach lights or a large bow to the gift. While it may not hide the present, it will still provide a festive look.
  • If you prefer your gifts to have a traditional, clean look, place them in a box with tissue paper. Simply secure the box shut with tape, and wrap it with wrapping paper.

There’s really no right or wrong way to wrap a gift. However, there are ways to help improve the appearance of your gift when faced with the difficult task of wrapping soft, box-less, or oddly-shaped items. We hope these methods will help you yield the results of a flawless wrapping job.
