And sometimes, it’s the only time you’re able to get your pup out to get some exercise. If you work late hours, your walk time may happen after the sun sets. And during winter, it’s often already dark by dinnertime.
When it comes to nighttime dog walking, it’s crucial that you prioritize your safety and well-being. Keep yourself and your dog safe and prepared on nighttime walks with these five tips from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.
One of the most important things to consider is the route you take. Walk somewhere that you know very well. This way, you’ll feel more comfortable with the area and won’t get lost.
Also make sure you’re choosing the safest route possible. There should be a sidewalk or designated walking path of some sort. Don’t just walk on the side of the street. If next to a road is your only option, always stay to the left and walk against traffic.
It’s also a good idea to go with a route that is somewhat lit.
Both you and your dog should be wearing at least one reflective or light-up item. For your pup, go with either a reflective harness and leash or an LED collar light.
For yourself, wear a headlamp or any sort of reflective gear.
When going for walks, you should always keep your dog on a leash, but this is especially important at nighttime. In addition to other people walking their dogs, you never know when you’re going to approach a wild animal.
Many nocturnal animals are active when it’s dark out. Keeping your dog on a leash will ensure they don’t chase after one. If your dog were to get away, it would be much harder to find them in the pitch black.
To stay as safe as possible, it’s best to go on your night dog walks with at least one other person. Bring your partner or family members with you, if you can. Otherwise, see if any of your friends or neighbors with dogs want to join you for regular nightly walks.
If you can’t go with another person, make sure you at least let a loved one know where and how long you’ll be walking for.
Get rid of any distractions, and stay alert while walking. Don’t scroll through your phone, and make sure you’re always watching where you’re walking. And don’t listen to music or audiobooks of any sort. You want your full attention to be on your surroundings.
Plus, if you use your phone during your walk, you could drain its battery power. You want your cell phone fully charged when walking at night, so you can call for help in case of an emergency.
