Not only will the right dog harness give you better control of your pooch, but it will also be more comfortable for them. Looking at the right fit, size, and design will all help you find the proper dog harness.
There are a few different designs to choose from when you’re choosing between dog harnesses.
Standard/Roman Harness – A standard harness has adjustable straps that go around the dog’s torso and below their front legs. You can attach the leash to the top of the harness.
Vest Harness – Vest harnesses are a great option because they don’t press on the dog’s neck. They’re mostly used with smaller dogs. They’re usually made with mesh for added comfort.
Step-In Harness – A step-in harness is similar to a standard harness. There are two holes that your dog steps in, and then they’re joined together in the back.
When you’re deciding on a dog harness, take into consideration the size of your dog.
Larger dogs that like to lunge or pull on the leash may benefit from a harness rather than a collar. The harness gives you more control over your dog when compared to a standard flat collar.
A vest harness is great for smaller dogs and those with breathing issues. They don’t press on the dog’s neck, and instead are strapped around the dog’s stomach and chest.
Small dog breeds with delicate windpipes, such as Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, benefit from a vest harness. It puts no pressure on the trachea.
Dog breeds who have trouble breathing because of their flat faces, such as French Bulldogs and Pugs, all benefit from a vest harness. If they pull on the leash, they’re not met with pressure like they would be with a regular flat collar.
Once you know what kind of harness you’ll need for your pup, you’ll have to find the right size. You don’t want the harness to be too tight and constrict or hurt your dog. You also don’t want it to be too loose, where they can wriggle right out of it.
To find the correct size, first measure your dog’s girth, or around their rib cage. Use a cloth measuring tape to measure around their rib cage, right behind their front legs. Add two inches to this measurement. If your dog happens to fall between sizes, go with the next size up.
To choose the right dog harness, also consider the width. For big dogs, go for a width of 1 inch or wider. For medium dogs, choose a width of 3/4 inch. And for small dogs, opt for a width of 1/2 inch or smaller.
The right dog harness makes your dog comfortable on the leash and gives you more control over them. They’re a great tool for when you’re training your dog to walk on a leash.
