Bikes and How to Choose One

Bikes are a great way of getting to and from one place. They can be used for recreation, exercise or commuting and running errands. It is important to think about what kind of bike riding you want to do to decide what kind you need.

Types of Bikes

Touring Bikes

No matter what kind of bike riding you’re planning on doing with your family. We can show you what type of bike will best fit your lifestyle.

Touring bikes are good for long distances and for carrying cargo. They have bigger frames, drop handlebars and more gears than other road bicycles. The lower gears are more useful when you’re trying to move up elevated terrain. The more relaxed frame of a touring bike makes the rider sit upright which is comfortable when riding long distances. You can outfit most touring bikes to have cargo racks and fenders.

Road Bikes

Road bikes have a fine frame and thinner tires. Their wheelbase will be shorter with either drop or flat handlebars. They are lightweight, as they are made for more speed and are only meant for biking on paved surfaces. Similar to touring bikes they can be used for commuting to and from work, running errands or for recreation and exercise. Road bikes should not be taken off road on dirt or rocky paths because they will not hold up against the strain.

Mountain Bikes

Mountain bikes are made for off-road biking. They have flat or upright handlebars and a very low gear range for pedaling. This is to give you the ability to climb up steep trails. Most mountain bikes have shock absorbers or suspension. Front suspension mountain bikes are called hardtrails and rear suspension are called full suspension bikes or duallies. If your mountain bike does not have a suspension it is called rigid.

You can also use your mountain bike for touring or commuting on paved surfaces. The wide tires and suspension make for a stable ride just about anywhere. However, mountain bikes are heavier and will not ride as light nor as efficiently as touring or road bikes.

Adult Tricycles

Adult tricycles are ideal for riders who are older, who may have a hard time maintaining balance or have other special needs. They have an easy “step through” design that makes for easy mounting and dismounting. Having three wheels gives the rider a stable platform that minimizes balance issues. The higher handlebars makes the rider sit upright so there is less discomfort.
