Bike Riding for Exercise

Bike riding
Bike riding is an excellent form of exercise. It combines heart-healthy aerobic exercise with mild lower body strength training and fat burning.

More and more people are taking up bike riding and cycling these days. One very good reason for this is that riding a bike is an excellent form of exercise. Here are a few ways that bike riding can help you stay healthy and fit.

Save Your Joints, Ride a Bike

After swimming, riding a bike is one of the best forms of exercise for your joints.

Running can wear your joints out from the repeated impact your ankles, knees, and hips have to absorb with each step. Years and miles of these impacts can lead to chronic joint pain and contribute to arthritis.

By contrast, bike riding is a low-impact form of exercise. There is very little shock to any of your joints, and bike riding even builds strength in your lower body joints.

Bike Riding Builds Lower Body Muscle

Since a bike is powered by your legs, you build and strengthen your legs while you ride. Riding a bike is like doing weight training, since you’re using your legs to propel your bike and yourself forward. To increase this benefit, bike uphill. This will increase the amount of weight you have to push each time you pedal. Also, your lower body muscles are some of your largest and most dense. This means that working them burns more calories than working smaller muscles. Weight training like this amplifies calorie burning and keeps it going long after you stop riding. Bike riding is also good for your back and core, as long as you maintain the right posture.

Your Heart Will Thank You

Bike riding is like a cardio workout and weight training in one. It’s a very efficient way to work out. By regularly engaging in heart-healthy activities like biking, running, and swimming, you reduce your risk of heart disease.
