Hill’s Science Diet began in 1939, when a blind man named Morris Frank asked his vet to help his ailing guide dog. After looking into potential triggers, it was clear that the problem was a result of poor nutrition. Dr. Mark Morris Sr. quickly started working on a new dog food formula that would provide the appropriate amount of nutrients and vitamins necessary to keep Mr. Frank’s guide dog happy and healthy. Nine years later Dr. Morris Sr. contracted with Hill Packaging Company creating the dog food brand everyone knows and loves today, Hill’s Science Diet.
Whether it’s conducting industry-leading research, analyzing nutrient levels in each of their products, or selecting optimal ingredients for your pet’s health, Hill’s is driven by science for results you can see – in every little transformation. When it comes to nutrition, there’s a lot of misleading information out there- that’s why it’s more important than ever that you have the facts you need to make informed decisions about your pet’s health.
Research, Love, and Care
Hill’s Science Diet has a Global Pet Nutrition Center where over 900 cats and dogs help with the creation of new pet food products. About half of the pets at the Nutrition Center are involved in taste tests. The other half helps the Hill’s research team with more long-term observations such as protein content, digestibility, antioxidant content, and overall nutritional sufficiency. For older pets, factors like gene expressions are identified to determine the best anti-aging ingredients. These programs are usually carried out in groups – 10 dogs/cats are set up with one type food, and 10 with another. The research team tracks the differences between the two groups to create a scientific profile for each pet food formulation.
