Blain's Farm and Fleet

Many of us just don't have the time to spend hours at the gym every day. Fortunately though, our bodies respond to exercise on an "anything is better than nothing" basis. Fifteen minutes a day on a stationary bike is infinitely better than an hour on the couch wishing you had more time in your day.

Here are some tips to keep up your exercise habit and stave off the holiday damage through the next several weeks:

Instructions

  1. Warm up "en route" to the machine. Place a pedometer on your waist to see how much you move in a day. Then try pacing while on the phone, or doing some light squats putting away the laundry. This way, you can get the blood flowing before you start the workout. That means when you jump on the bike or elliptical trainer you can put in 15 strong, focused minutes.
  2. Stick with interval training. A mountain of research has shown that short bursts of high-intensity exercise, interspersed with longer periods of low-intensity exercise, burns more calories than long slow bouts of cardio. Pedal or stride rigorously for 30 seconds, then immediately lower the speed for 60-90 seconds. Repeat this cycle for the length of your workout.
  3. Break it up. Two ten-minute sessions a day is just as good as one 20-minute workout. You can even break your workout into thirds. The important thing is to do what you can, when you can.
  4. Challenge yourself to try something different this year. Want a kick start? Try the Bell® Gabrielle Reese 30 Day Challenge Workout Kit. This kit contains three 10 minute workouts that you can incorporate little by little and see full body results. Included DVD contains Strength, Core and Cardio workouts. Do one a day for 30 minutes to look and feel better.
  5. Make the most out of walking the dog by strapping on a Bell® Cardio Weighted Belt System. Burn more calories and increase endurance by carrying up to six pounds around your waist. 10 removable weights help you to customize the belt for a perfect fit.
  6. Another tip to help you get in the work out groove: Add music! Music can be a great way to help you push through a routine. Create a playlist with songs that make you want to move. You can customize it so there are slower songs for warm up and up tempo songs for your core work out. Try the GPX® Digital MP3 Player for a convenient way to take your music with you while you work out.
