Instructions

  1. Start planning early and get organized. Use the tools that we have provided to get a jump-start on what you’ll need to take with you. Not only will it help you remember everything you need, but it will help keep you a little more relaxed during a rather stressful time.
  2. Take inventory. Print out the College Checklist PDF file and take inventory of what you have. Many times, you will find that what you need in college or your first apartment are things that you already have. We’ve even included areas in our list for you to add items you think you’ll need.
  3. Find out if you can share with your roommate. If you’re going to have a roommate, give them a call now to discuss what they have and compare it to what you have. By doing this, you will be able to determine if you’ll be able to share items, giving you more space in your apartment or dorm. This also helps determine exactly what you need to buy. Once you’ve gone through the list with your roommates, you also can discuss the possibility of splitting the costs of the additional items that you need.
  4. Check to find out if there are any restrictions. Be sure to check with your landlord or housing officials to find out if there are any restrictions that you need to be aware of. Most dormitories will have restrictions on appliances and decorating, while apartment restrictions are much more relaxed. It would be frustrating to have things like a mini-refrigerator or microwave with you, only to find out that you can’t use them.
  5. Determine your mode of transportation. Determine whether or not you are going to bring your vehicle. On some campuses, parking is very limited and can be expensive. It might be better to use a bicycle as your main mode of transportation.
  6. Consider bringing a Blain's Farm & Fleet gift card with you. These work just like cash at any Farm & Fleet store or online, and can be recharged at any time. Whether you need additional supplies for your apartment, or the oil changed on your vehicle, you’ll be able to get what you need when you need it. And, it’s so easy to recharge, mom and dad could do it for you (hint, hint)!
