How to Fertilize your Lawn

1. Choosing a spreader. There are two types of spreaders – rotary (broadcast) or drop. A rotary (broadcast) spreader creates a wider path for distributing the fertilizer and is excellent for larger lawns. A drop spreader is more accurate when distributing fertilizer and is more appropriate for smaller lawns or if you must maneuver around flower beds. It is important that you choose a spreader that best suits your needs.

3. Test your spreader opening and closing mechanism to ensure it works properly. Once you’ve done this, be sure to leave it in the closed position until you are ready to fertilize.
4. Fill your spreader with the appropriate fertilizer, based on the time of the year. Be sure that you do this on a hard, stable surface and away from your lawn.
5. Select an area on your lawn to start fertilizing. Adjust the spreader settings to the specifications listed on the back of the fertilizer bag. Adjust the spreader mechanism to open and begin walking at a normal speed. Do not overlap, skip or miss areas and be sure to shut off the spreader when turning or stopping.
6. When you have finished applying the fertilizer to your entire lawn, be sure to thoroughly clean your spreader. To do this, simply hose off your spreader both inside and outside. Be sure that you do not rinse off your spreader while on the grass.
7. Water your lawn if necessary. As always, be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions for your spreader and fertilizer.
