Instructions

  1. Many concerns with social wasps occur late in the season when colonies grow large and the above-ground nests of hornets and paper wasps become apparent. If the wasps are not causing a problem, the best solution is to wait until the nest is abandoned in the fall. The nest can be safely removed in the winter or, if left alone, will break up during late fall and winter.
  2. Commonly sold wasp traps only are effective for yellowjackets. They are not attractive for paper wasps or hornets and will not assist in control of these types of wasps. For exposed nesting species, such as paper wasps, insecticides can easily be applied directly to the nest and control should be excellent.
  3. If you are going to spray nests, consider all safety precautions first. Wear long sleeves, gloves, a hat with a towel draped over your neck and even a face mask.
  4. The most important element of wasp and bee control is to destroy the nest. Aerosol “wasp and hornet” sprays can be used to knock down bees/wasps around the nest. Always approach the nest at night when bees are reluctant to fly. Raid® Wasp and Hornet Killer sprays up to 22' so you can remain a safe distance from the nest.
  5. Destroying nests in vents, attics, crawlspaces or hollow areas can be difficult, often requiring the services of pest management professionals. Honey bee nests contain honey that must be removed after the bees are eliminated because it will rot and attract secondary pests.
  6. If you need a quick fix to get rid of a bee nest, a spray can be used. Apply several times before attempting to remove the nest from its location. If at all possible, hire an extermniator for extreme circumstances. They are trained professionals who can prevent you from being stung unnecessarily.
