By applying grass seed over your lawn, you can actually help fill in bare spots and bring new life to your existing grass. You can thicken your lawn by overseeding it. Just use these tips from Scotts and Blain’s Farm & Fleet to get started.
According to Scotts, overseeding is an easy and effective way to strengthen your existing lawn. It also thickens your grass to help naturally protect against weed problems.
By overseeding, you revive a worn and thin lawn. You do this by filling in bare spots, crowding out weeds by thickening the lawn, and improving heat and drought tolerance.
Before you overseed your lawn, use your lawn mower to cut it at the lowest setting, and bag the clippings. This allows for good seed to soil contact when you spread it.
After mowing, rake your lawn to remove debris and dead grass. This will also help loosen the soil.
Seeding is the easy part. Choose a grass seed. Then, fill up your spreader with it, adjusting the setting according to the label directions.
Next, apply it to your lawn. Use the reseeding settings on the back of your seed package for the best results.
To help start the seed germination, water your lawn once or twice a day based on weather conditions. Do this until the new seedlings have reached the height of your existing lawn.
Use a water timer to help frequently mist your lawn.
According to Scotts, you can continue to mow your lawn as needed. But try to limit the activity on your lawn until your new seedlings have reached a mowing height.
Spring and fall provide the best conditions for cool-season grass seed. In the fall, the soil is still warm, but the air is cooler. These are both optimal growing conditions for grass seed.
Late-spring through mid-summer is the best time for overseeding your lawn. That weather provides ideal conditions for warm-season grass seed.
