FAQs About Jar Candles

How can I make a jar candle last longer?

A few simple habits can help you get more from every candle.

1. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before each use to help it burn evenly and reduce excess smoke.
2. Try to let the wax melt all the way across the top during each burn, especially the first time you light it, which helps prevent tunneling.
3. Keeping the candle away from drafts, fans, and open windows can also help it burn more evenly and last longer.

Is it safe to reuse a candle jar?

Yes, in most cases you can reuse a candle jar once all the wax has been removed and the container has cooled completely. Just be sure to wash the jar thoroughly and inspect it for cracks or damage before using it for something new.

Once your candle is nearly used up and the jar is cleaned out, there are plenty of ways to give it a second life. Here are a few popular ideas:

1. Store cotton balls, cotton swabs, or hair ties in the bathroom.
2. Organize pens, pencils, paper clips, or other desk supplies.
3. Hold craft materials like buttons, beads, or sewing supplies.
4. Use it as a small planter for herbs, succulents, or starter plants.
5. Store spices, coffee pods, or small pantry items.
6. Keep matches near a fireplace or fire pit.
7. Create a decorative centerpiece by filling it with seasonal items, stones, or fairy lights.
8. Use it as a catch-all for keys, loose change, or other everyday essentials.

A sturdy candle jar can be surprisingly useful long after the candle is gone, making it an easy way to add a little organization or decor around the house.

What's the best way to remove wax from a used jar candle?

Once your candle is nearly finished and there's only a small amount of wax left at the bottom of the jar, you can remove the remaining wax and reuse the container. One easy method is to place the jar in the freezer for a few hours. The leftover wax will harden and often pop out with gentle pressure from a spoon or butter knife.

You can also use warm (not boiling) water. Pour the warm water into the jar and let it sit for several minutes. As the wax softens and loosens, it will float to the top of the water and begin to harden as it cools. Once the wax has solidified, simply lift it out and discard it. Pour out the water, then wash the jar with warm, soapy water to remove any remaining wax residue. After it's clean and completely dry, the jar is ready for storage, decor, or another use around the house.
