If you’re new to ice fishing, follow these tips from Frabill<\/a> and Blain’s Farm & Fleet to help you get started.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Frabill’s ice fishing expert Dan Galusha recommends that anyone wanting to start ice fishing should go after panfish first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will give you experience catching fish and help you save money on ice fishing tackle and equipment<\/a>. Plus, you’ll get to see if you actually enjoy it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are the basic ice fishing techniques he suggests for any beginning ice angler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/strong>. Starting on the ice is not expensive. The basic ice fishing equipment tools are a rod\/reel combination<\/a>, an ice auger, jigs, and bait. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galusha also suggests adding portable ice fishing shelters<\/a> to your gear, especially if you decide to stick with the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2<\/strong>. Galusha recommends a spinning combination with 24″ light action rod. If budget allows, purchase two combinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reels are ultra light, which you can also use during open water times of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3<\/strong>. Next, comes an auger<\/a>. This tool is essential for drilling holes in the ice. And a hand model may be best for beginners, mainly because of cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you think you’ll stick to the sport, Galusha suggests a power auger. They cut through the ice quicker than manual models, but they do cost more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4<\/strong>. Another essential item of the sport is a stool to sit on while you’re out on the ice. You can get a bucket and seat combination combination, which also has an area for live bait and tackle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5<\/strong>. When it comes to ice fishing lures, Galusha recommends sticking to the basics. It’s good to have an assortment of sizes, which you can switch up when the action gets slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6<\/strong>. Wax worms<\/a> are a good all-around bait. But make sure to have some jars of Berkley Powerbait Biodegradable Crappie Nibbles<\/a>, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7<\/strong>. A portable ice fishing shelter is a great piece of equipment for any ice angler, no matter what your level of experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a few more dollars, you can purchase two- to three-man ice shelters. These will give room for a buddy, as well as extra equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8<\/strong>. Ice fishing safety is very important. So be sure to have the proper warm clothing<\/a>, including a good pair of gloves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frostbite and hypothermia can be a serious problem for ice anglers. Wear thick gear like an ice fishing parka and flannel-lined jeans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9<\/strong>. Another product for safety on the lake is a set of ice picks<\/a> to wear around your neck. Hopefully you will never have to use this device. But if you fall through the ice, it is the easiest way (other than having a rope thrown out by another person) to pull yourself out of the hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10<\/strong>. As with everything, remember, safety first. Make sure the ice is thick enough (at least three to four inches). Check the ice fishing reports in your area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If possible, go with a buddy or near a group of other ice fishers. Even experienced ice fishermen can find themselves in some tricky situations if they let their guard down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
