Take action early when dealing with lawn weeds. They spread very quickly.<\/p>\n<h2>Preventative weed fighting<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Pre-ermergent herbicides \u2013<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The best practice is to prevent lawn weeds before they happen. You can do this by treating your lawn with a pre-emergence herbicide. This will help prevent weeds from taking hold in your turf in the first place. You only have to apply a pre-emergent once per year. Do it in the spring before plants or flowers start to emerge.\u00a0There are a lot of organic herbicides, but most of them are for pre-emergent.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mulching \u2013<\/strong><\/em> Another good way to keep lawn weeds down is to <a href=\"\/mulch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mulch<\/a> any flower beds, trees, or water features in your lawn. For flower beds, you&#8217;ll want to apply an even, two- to three-inch layer across the entire bed. For trees, use a three- to four-inch layer, and make sure you spread it right up to the trunk of the tree. For a water feature, two or three inches of mulch should be fine. Mulch helps keep weeds from popping up in the areas that are hard to get to when you fertilize and mow.<\/p>\n<h2>Killing Lawn Weeds<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Pulling or digging weeds\u00a0\u2013<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0If you already have lawn weeds, you&#8217;ll want to pull them and dig their roots out with a <a title=\"Cultivator Tools at Blain's Farm &amp; Fleet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmandfleet.com\/s\/?keyword=cultivator&amp;categorynew=1%7CLawn%20and%20Garden&amp;price_current=1,88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weeder or cultivator tool<\/a>. If you have a seriously thick patch of weeds in your lawn, you may want to till up the entire area with a <a title=\"Tillers at Blain's Farm &amp; Fleet\" href=\"\/garden-tillers-cultivators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tiller or power cultivator<\/a> and reseed your grass there.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Post-emergent herbicides \u2013<\/strong> <\/em>You also may want to spray the weeds with a post-emergence herbicide. This will kill the weeds you have, but be careful; some of these\u00a0herbicides can also kill your grass. Use weed killer wisely.
