Those numbers tell you how much of the three main plant nutrients are mixed into the fertilizer in the bag. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-big-three-nutrients\"><strong>The &#8220;Big Three&#8221; Nutrients<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;big three&#8221; lawn nutrients\u00a0are\u00a0nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. The numbers will always be in that order on the bag or bottle.\u00a0\u00a0So a &#8220;28-0-3&#8221; fertilizer\u00a0has 28% nitrogen, 0% phosphorous, and 3% potassium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the big three helps your grass in a different way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nitrogen<\/strong> helps your grass grow more quickly and gives it better color. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phosphorous<\/strong> helps your lawn grow strong, thick roots. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Potassium<\/strong> makes your grass stronger by increasing its ability to resist disease, drought, and cold weather. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The best fertilizer for maintaining a lawn that doesn&#8217;t have any noticeable problems is one that has a good balance of the big three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your lawn has problems with drought and seems to start withering\u00a0as soon as you turn the sprinkler off, you probably need fertilizer with\u00a0a lot of\u00a0phosphorous and potassium to make your grass stronger and deepen its roots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different types of grass need different amounts of the big three.
