There\u2019s nothing more infuriating than stepping out on a beautiful morning to inspect your well cared for vegetable garden only to find that a bunny or a herd of deer have plowed it down like thieves in the night. Before you go out and get a pack of Scottish Deer Hounds to guard your garden, Blain’s Farm & Fleet suggests you read this article on the different kinds of garden fences.<\/p>\n

Common Garden Fences<\/h2>\n

Chicken Wire Fences<\/a><\/h3>\n

This is a very common and economical type of garden fencing. It is light weight, but can still keep out many small animals.<\/p>\n

Welded Wire Garden Fences<\/a><\/h3>\n

A very popular type of fencing; it is relatively inexpensive, but stronger than chicken wire. It also does not need to be stretched from post to post, making it easier to install than chicken wire. Often it comes with smaller openings at the bottom to keep out small animals. Due to its rigidity, welded wire fencing it is not well suited for hilly gardens.<\/p>\n

Plastic Mesh Garden Fences<\/a><\/h3>\n

This is a cost effective and lightweight option made to keep deer out of the garden. Plastic mesh is a good alternative for those who can\u2019t use electric fencing. It is too tall for most deer to jump over, but unfortunately a rabbit can chew a hole through it with ease. To deter the chewers, use a chicken wire or welded wire fence on the outside of the plastic mesh fence.<\/p>\n

3D Garden Fences<\/h3>\n

If you live in an area with particularly athletic deer, this may be a good option for you. A 3D fence is a double fence, with one fence three feet inside the second. This type of fence works by confusing the deer, who are masters at the high jump but have very poor depth perception. The double fence technique scares the deer from attempting to jump. If your local deer turn out to be both athletic and fearless, you may need to run electrical fence wire through the 3D fence.<\/p>\n

Electrical Garden Fences<\/a><\/h3>\n

This is a great option for many gardeners to keep deer and small animals away from their vegetables. An electric fence is not meant to injure an animal, just give them a shock to scare them away. This is a far more humane method of garden protection than using traps or poisons. Before hooking up an electric fence, find out if such fences are permissible in your area. Also, electric fences are not a good option for those who have pets and small children who play in close proximity to the fence.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not saying that getting a pack of Scottish Deerhounds wouldn\u2019t be fun, but perhaps installing one of these great fencing options would be more cost effective and lower maintenance in the long run. Plus, just like any other dog, Deerhounds don\u2019t want to guard the garden all night. They\u2019d much rather be on the couch with you watching TV.<\/p>\n
