It’s probably happened to all of us at some point. One day, you start your car or truck and it sounds like a T-Rex. After one nearly-maddening trip to and from work, you wonder: “Why is my car so loud?” You may already be thinking that it’s a problem with your muffler<\/a>, but how can you be sure?<\/p>\n

Well, first it’s important to understand that there are a lot of parts to an exhaust besides the muffler. A hole or crack in any of these parts can cause your vehicle to run very loudly.<\/p>\n

Your exhaust system is made up of a series of pipes that are bolted and clamped together to reach all the way to the muffler (or mufflers,\u00a0<\/em>if you have dual exhaust) at the back of your car or truck. A leak at any of the pipes or joints ahead of the muffler can allow engine noise to escape before it reaches the muffler to be dampened.<\/p>\n

Inspecting Your Car or Truck’s Exhaust System<\/h2>\n

To find a crack, hole, or leak in your exhaust system, you’ll have to have it inspected by a professional auto mechanic or\u00a0inspect\u00a0it yourself.<\/p>\n

Our trained auto technicians would be happy to inspect your vehicle’s exhaust system in our Automotive Service Centers<\/a>. The inspection only takes a few minutes and is free. We can also replace any parts that are cracked or leaking.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to properly inspect your exhaust system without raising the vehicle up on a lift, but you can do\u00a0a visual inspection and repairs on your exhaust yourself by crawling underneath. You may need a flashlight<\/a> or\u00a0worklight<\/a>\u2013it will be dark under there. Check the muffler and tailpipe first.\u00a0If the muffler and tailpipe are rust free and the joints between them are solid, work your way up to the engine, inspecting the pipes as you move along.<\/p>\n

Repairing Your Exhaust<\/h2>\n

If you find a hole in your muffler, and it’s small enough, you may be able to patch it with a muffler repair kit. If you find a leak on one of your exhaust pipes, you may be able to patch it with an exhaust pipe repair kit<\/a>. However, these are only temporary solutions.<\/p>\n

The best fix if you find a hole, crack, or leak is to replace the part. You can find all the parts you need<\/a> at your local Blain’s Farm & Fleet store<\/a>‘s automotive parts department<\/a>.<\/p>\n
