They are actually very easy to replace, and you should always check your fuses first if some of your car or trucks electrical systems are not working.

What Do Truck and Car Fuses Do?

Truck or car fuses help protect your vehicle’s electronics from power surges or short circuits. When your car has a short circuit, a large jolt of electricity is sent through the system. This jolt can cause a fire and melt the electronics on your car or truck. Luckily, truck or car fuses break the connection between the system’s power source and the car’s electronics. This breaks the circuit and can stop the short circuit jolt from continuing and causing dangerous high heat and fires.

Car fuses do this by breaking themselves. A car fuse allows current to flow through it until the current rises higher than the weakest electrical component in the circuit can handle. The conductive wire or plate in the fuse is is designed to melt before the current in the circuit hits an unsafe level. When this happens, the circuit is broken at the fuse, and the flow of current through the circuit stops. This causes everything that is connected to the circuit to stop working. So, if you have a short circuit in your AC system, the fuse will “blow” and shut down the circuit to prevent damage.

I Have a Blown Fuse in My Vehicle, What Do I Do?

First, find out what the amp rating on the blown fuse is. There are three places to find this number. The first is on the fuse itself, the second is on the underside of the fusebox lid, and the third is in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. The best place to check is on the fusebox lid. Getting the number here or from your owner’s manual will ensure that you get the fuse that the manufacturer recommends for that circuit. It’s possible that the blown fuse blew because it’s the wrong fuse for that circuit. It’s best to confirm that the fuse and the recommendation on the fusebox lid or owner’s manual match.

After you know which amp rating you need, bring the blown fuse with you to your local Blain’s Farm & Fleet store’s automotive department so you can compare it to the new fuse. This will help you make sure that the new fuse you buy is the right size. Truck and car fuses come in a lot of different shapes and sizes, so it’s always nice to be able to compare the new ones to what you took out of your car or truck.

After you find the right fuse, simply plug it into the empty fuseholder that you took the old fuse out of. Make sure you turn the vehicle off before removing or installing car fuses.

You can also take your vehicle to one of Blain’s Farm & Fleet’s Automotive Service Centers where a trained auto mechanic can replace the fuse for you. This would be a great time to have your electrical systems checked to make sure there isn’t a bigger issue with your car or truck that’s causing it to blow fuses.

Blown truck or car fuses can be a sign of a more serious problem, so if you replace a blown fuse and the new fuse blows again right away, bring your car or truck to a trained auto mechanic to have your electrical systems checked.
