When it comes to caring for your vehicle, there’s a lot to be said about tires. You might have heard it all\u2014 new tires should always go on the front; you can drive as long as you want on a spare tire…the list goes on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth 1: When replacing two tires, the new ones go on the front.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

In reality, if you’re only replacing two tires, they need to go on the rear of your vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rear tires provide stability. Without stability, steering and breaking on wet surfaces can cause your vehicle to spin out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you put the new tires only on the front, they can actually cause water to shoot back at your worn-out rear ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth 2: The best air pressure for a tire is on the sidewall.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

The maximum tire pressure listed on the sidewall is for that specific tire. It’s not necessarily the tire pressure recommended for your vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always use the tire pressure listed on the driver’s side door jamb or in your owner’s manual for a safe and smooth ride.<\/p>\n\n\n

Myth 3: The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) makes sure my tires have the right air pressure.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

While TPMS is handy to have, it’s meant as a last resort to indicate low tire pressure. According to AAA, TPMS isn’t required to warn drivers until tire pressure is 25% below the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. That’s well below required pressure for safe driving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s important to routinely check your tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge<\/a>. Make sure it matches what’s in your owner’s manual or on your door jamb.<\/p>\n\n\n

Myth 4: A vehicle vibration is solely caused by tires.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

There’s actually more to why your vehicle may shake or vibrate. Your wheels could need balancing, brakes could be damaged or worn out, or you could have a worn out wheel bearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of culprits at hand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Myth 5: As long as there’s tread left, the tire is safe to use.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Tread depth isn’t the only part of your tire to pay attention to. Rubber deteriorates with age and exposure to the elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While tires come with a mileage warranty, your climate and driving habits can also factor into a tire’s life expectancy. Regularly check for cracks, bulges, or bumps in your tire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
