It&#8217;s recommended to adopt or buy at least two chinchillas together. Otherwise they can get lonely quickly and become lethargic and depressed. If you&#8217;re thinking about adding a chinchilla to your family, you&#8217;ll need to know the basics of caring for your new pet. Use these tips from Blain&#8217;s Farm &amp; Fleet to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"feeding-your-chinchilla\">Feeding Your Chinchilla<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/s\/?categorynew=1|Pet Supplies&amp;keyword=timothy+hay\">Timothy hay<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/chinchilla-food\/\">quality chinchilla pellets<\/a>&nbsp;are the main part of a chinchilla&#8217;s diet. Small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables can be worked in, not exceeding 10% of their diet. &nbsp;Their water should be changed daily. Water should be filtered and chlorine-free.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"housing\">Housing<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Although they&#8217;re small in size, chinchillas actually need bigger cages than your average small pet. This is especially true if you have more than one chinchilla in a cage (which is recommended). They need at least 2 square feet of floor space per animal. Chinchillas are active and like to jump around in their cage. Having a cage with multiple stories is ideal. Bedding should be changed and cages should be cleaned regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"grooming\">Grooming<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>Teeth<\/strong> &#8211; Like any other rodent, a chinchilla&#8217;s teeth are always growing. They need something to chew on to keep their teeth under control. Chew toys&nbsp;such as stick balls and rice pops work well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fur<\/strong> &#8211; This is where chinchillas are truly unique. In the wild, chinchillas use fine sand to clean their fur. At least twice a week your chinchilla will need a dust bath. You need to use dust specifically made for chinchillas &#8211; not any ordinary sand. The dust is fine and soft enough to clean the fur, whereas regular sand will damage their skin and fur. &nbsp;To give your chinchilla a dust bath, fill a large container with about 2 inches of dust. Set the container in the chinchilla cage and let them &#8220;bathe&#8221; for 15 &#8211; 20 minutes.
