Austra White<\/strong> – These birds are a cross between a Black Australorp rooster and a White Leghorn hen. They’re good layers and also good for meat production. Austra Whites are also calmer than a pure Leghorn chicken breed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barred Rock<\/strong> – The Barred Rock are great backyard birds for both egg and meat production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Australorp<\/strong> – While bred for egg production, Black Australorps are also good for meat production. These beautiful birds simply require a wind break, dry bedding, and plenty of shade in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Cochin<\/strong> – These larger birds handle colder regions well, perfect for meat production in the Midwest. Black Cochin are fluffy and gentle, with a kid-friendly temperament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Sex Link<\/strong> – The Black Sex Link comes from crossing a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen. They not only are good for meat production, but are also very good for egg production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornish Cross<\/strong> – Cornish Cross are by far the most popular bird for meat production, both on hobby farms and commercial farms. They’re specifically bred as a meat bird, and shouldn’t be kept for egg production or as a pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golden Wyandotte<\/strong> – Golden Wyandottes originated in Wisconsin in 1880. They do well in both confinement and free range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light Brahma<\/strong> – These feathery birds are good layers of brown eggs and work well for meat production. They’re also children-friendly, so they make good backyard pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhode Island Red<\/strong> – Rhode Island Reds are a true heritage breed, and are great for both egg production and meat production. Their egg laying abilities and hardiness make them a popular choice for backyard birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
