Layering and wearing the right gear for ice fishing is a must if you plan on braving the cold weather all day. Starting with a moisture-wicking base layer will keep you warm and dry all day long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow bibs add protection from the cold and snow. Many bibs even come with hand-warming pockets. In addition to bibs, ice fishing jackets or parkas are a must. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, ice fishing gloves or mittens, a winter hat, and even a balaclava will protect your hands and face from the winter cold.<\/p>\n\n\n

Shelters aren’t required for ice fishing. But with them, you’ll be able to get out on the ice a lot more during the season.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ice Fishing Auger<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n

Now, we start getting into the fishing gear itself. In order to make your fishing hole in the ice, you’ll need an ice auger. You have a choice between a hand auger and a power auger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re fishing in an ice shelter or shanty, you’ll want to use an electric or hand auger. This is because a gas-powered auger gives off fumes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gas-powered auger, however, will cut deeper holes in the ice and won’t take as much muscle to operate as a hand auger. It all comes down to what you’re comfortable using on the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may also want to have an ice scoop or ice skimmer on hand. They will help you clear ice and slush from the hole you create.<\/p>\n\n\n
