Learn how to install a programmable thermostat<\/a><\/strong> in these simple steps.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

A programmable thermostat is great for two important things: saving money and conserving energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the model you buy, you can program day and night temperatures. There may even be a setting for every day of the week. You’ll be more comfortable with your heating and cooling bill, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you have a smart thermostat, you can connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi. Then, you can use your smartphone to adjust the temperature from anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the instructions that came with your new unit before starting the installation. Manufacturer instructions may vary for each model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get started, follow these basic steps from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n

1. Remove the old unit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Turn off the power supply to the thermostat. Remove the existing thermostat, including the wall plate. Disconnect the wires.<\/p>\n\n\n

2. Label the wires<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Your thermostat will have two or four wires, depending on whether your heating and cooling systems are separate or one unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Label the wires with masking tape<\/a>, noting where they were attached on the old thermostat. Secure them (tie into a loop or tape them to the wall) to keep them from falling back into the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n

3. Drill mounting holes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Install the new wall plate, if there is one. You may need to drill<\/a> new holes for the new model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use a level to mark the mounting holes. Use drywall anchors<\/a>, if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n

4. Connect the wires<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Connect the wires as directed by the instructions that come with your particular unit. Follow these instructions carefully. Install batteries<\/a>, if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n

5. Mount the new unit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Mount the unit to the wall plate. Restore the power, and program the new thermostat as directed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you come home from work at 5pm, make sure your heat kicks back on around 4:30pm. So it’s nice and toasty when you walk in the door. But you can breath easy that you didn’t keep an empty home too warm while you were away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in the warmer months, you can do the same thing with air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installing a programmable thermostat is just one way to conserve energy and save money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
