Before you get started, read through our article about <a href=\"\/blog\/pruning-trees-and-shrubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pruning trees and shrubs<\/a>, and the benefits that come with the common lawn care task.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-prune-a-tree\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How to Prune a Tree:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Before you start pruning, make sure you have the proper safety equipment including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmandfleet.com\/s\/?keyword=garden+gloves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protective gloves<\/a> and <a href=\"\/safety-glasses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protective eyewear<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Begin pruning by assessing the shape of your tree, and decide which shape and direction you want the tree to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Avoid removing major branches of the tree, but remove any branches that are damaged. When you cut off the damaged branches, the nutrients they were using can be used by the healthy parts of the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Make thinning cuts to areas that are thick and full of branches, which should be made slightly above the parent branch. Prune branches that can be obstructive to your walkway or lawn. For smaller branches, you can use one-handed <a href=\"\/pruning-shears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pruning shears<\/a>, and for medium branches, use <a href=\"\/lopping-shears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lopping shears<\/a>. You will only want to prune up to 25 percent of a tree\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> If you plan on cutting off larger branches, you will want to use a <a href=\"\/pruning-saws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pruning saw<\/a>. Undercut the limb about a fourth of the way through the branch, between six and 12 inches from the trunk, and then cut through the top of the limb, about one inch beyond the initial cut.
