Make your lawn and your garden beds look smooth and picture-perfect by using a lawn edger. Routine lawn edging also helps keep grass roots from invading your sidewalk or driveway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re using a gas-powered edger or a manual one, you can achieve straight, defined edges with your lawn and garden. Just follow these simple steps from Blain’s Farm & Fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 1<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Before you begin edging, you should mow your yard to get a manicured lawn. It should be at a good, short length. <\/p>\n\n\n

Step 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Choose an edger that will work best for you. Both manual edgers and power edgers have their own advantages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power edgers work best when you’re working with a straight line or a right angle. If you’re working with curved edged or edges that aren’t clearly defined, it’s best to use a manual edging tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you’ll be using your edger on thicker brush like weeds or hedges, a powered one is the better choice. It will be able to cut through harder materials better than a manual one. But if you’re just going to be using it primarily on regular grass, a manual edger will work just fine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also walk-behind edgers, which are great if you have an extra large yard. <\/p>\n\n\n

Step 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Before you bring out your edger, make sure you’re wearing protective clothing. It’s a good idea to wear long pants or tall boots to protect your legs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should also have on safety glasses to shield your eyes from any flying grass or debris. If you’re using an electric edger, you could also put on a pair of earmuffs or plugs to block out the loud noise. <\/p>\n\n\n

Step<\/strong> 4<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Place your lawn edger’s wheel on the pavement with the blade over the edge into the grass. Keep the edger blade about 1″ to 1-1\/2″ deep into the soil to make a clean cut. <\/p>\n\n\n

Step<\/strong> 5<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Refine the edge you’ve made with a garden spade<\/a>, deepening the cut to about four to six inches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re cutting a new bed, you also need to cut the turf on the inside of it with a spade.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 6<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Use a string trimmer<\/a> or weed whacker to remove any extra grass. This will help ensure that it doesn’t grow in the space left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n

Step 7<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Install lawn edging<\/a> into the space you’ve created with the lawn edger and spade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
