Are you noticing that your plant might not be blooming as well or is dropping leaves? Does the soil look dried out? It may be time to repot your plants. To repot plants and flowers, follow these simple instructions from Blain’s Farm & Fleet, and your plants and flowers will be blooming again in no time.

How to Repot Plants and Flowers:

1. Look for the following signs that your potted plants needs to be repotted:

Plant roots coming through the drainage hole

Matted roots at the soil surface

There are more roots than soil

Poor flowering

Dried out soil

Stunted leaves and soil

2. The best time to repot your plants is in the spring, when there is the most root growth and plants are able to recover more quickly from shock.

3. After you’ve removed the plant from the pot, cut away any dead, dying, damaged roots with a pair of pruning shears. Roots should be either white or a lighter color. If your roots are black or there is a foul smell, then this is a sign of a more serious issue. If thick roots completely encircle the soil, cut away in vertical strips from the sides and the bottom of the root ball.

4. Gently remove the extra soil from the roots. Plants that have been housed in the same pot are more likely to build up salts and mineral residue from watering. The organic elements of the potting mix and peat moss also break down over time.

5. Fill up a larger planter with potting mix and set your plant in the center of the planter. The planter should be larger than the plant’s previous one. Make sure that you cover all of the roots of your plant with potting mix.

6. All you have to do now to give your plants a good drink of water, let them drain and you’re done!

With your plants repotted, you can tend to the rest of your patio and garden.
