You want to make sure the seed you buy is stored safely so it&#8217;s always ready to use when your feathered friends are hungry. Don &amp; Lillian Stokes of <a href=\"https:\/\/stokesfeeders.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stokes Select<\/a> share a few tips on bird seed storage.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-tips-for-proper-bird-seed-storage\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5 Tips for Proper Bird Seed Storage:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Buy fresh bird seed.<\/strong> Make sure you buy <a href=\"\/bird-seed-and-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fresh seed<\/a> in the first place. Examine the seed, if possible, in the store for any signs of mold, insects, etc. Often, the seed comes fresh from the manufacturer but is subject to deterioration or insects if the retail store improperly stored their bird seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Choose the right containers.<\/strong> Seed should be stored in clean and dry <a href=\"\/bird-seed-storage-containers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">containers<\/a>. How much seed you buy will determine the size of container and choice of container you need. Plastic containers with lids are a great storage option, but you can even adapt storage containers designed for other purposes such as aluminum or plastic trash cans. Taking advantage of seed sales, which usually requires buying larger quantities of seed, is only a good idea if you get some good, large storage containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Store seed in the right place.<\/strong> Seed should be stored in a cool and dry place, which is essential to preserve freshness. Store it in cooler areas of your house, if possible, and only store your seed outside if there&#8217;s cooler weather and if it&#8217;s not in a location where animals can get into it. Make sure the container has a tight-fitting lid and that animals cannot chew into the container. If possible, place bird seed containers in locations that are handy for you to access. Proper storage will save you money and protect your investment as you will not have to throw out seed because it has deteriorated or gone bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Make it easy to fill your feeders.<\/strong> Get a good scoop&nbsp;such as pitcher, measuring cup, etc., and put it in your seed containers to make getting seed out of the container easier. Use these for filling feeders. Depending on where your seed and feeders are located, you may carry your feeders inside and fill them from the large container, or fill smaller containers, such as juice pitchers, with seed from the larger containers and carry it outside to fill feeders there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Keep feeders filled with fresh bird seed.<\/strong> Check bird seed in your containers often to make sure it is remaining fresh. It&#8217;s important to keep <a href=\"\/bird-feeders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feeders<\/a> filled with the fresh seed if you want to attract the maximum number of birds. <a href=\"\/blog\/attracting-birds-nyjer-seed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Birds, like finches<\/a>, often will not come to seed, such as <a href=\"\/wild-bird-seed\/?seed_type=Nyjer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thistle (Nyjer),<\/a> that is old or has gone rancid. Discard any moldy, deteriorated, or insect-infested seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offer a variety of feeders and fresh foods in clean feeders and you will attract the maximum number of birds.
