Looking to revive a room by giving it a new splash of paint? Before you start painting a room in your home, you need to know how to prep walls for painting. Blain’s Farm & Fleet is here to help.

How to Prep Walls for Painting

1. Clear the room. Remove all or as much furniture as you can from the room you will be painting as painting can be a messy job. What would be the point of all of your hard work if you get paint stains on your furniture and floors? Drop cloths are great as they provide protection for your items and can be easily disposed of when you’re finished.

2. Dust and vacuum the room. Dust and vacuum the floors, walls, and ceilings. You want to be able to have a clean surface on which to work with. If you are dusting over sand-based, primer painted walls, don’t use a fiber duster or else the little fibers will attach themselves to your walls.

Get rid of all of the dust by using a clean broom or a dry mop. It is important to make sure that whatever you use to dust your walls is clean before you use it. Dirt, grease and grime can get onto your walls and can permanently stain them.

3. Clean the walls. Clean the walls with a mixture of mild soapy water using a wet sponge. Use a non–sudsing powder compound that is formulated for heavy duty cleaning that gets rid of grease, grime, smoke, soot, and chalked paint from walls, woodwork, and floors. When you’re all done cleaning the walls, wipe them down with a dry towel.

4. Repair any wall problems. Fill in any nail holes to make your walls nice and smooth. Apply spackling onto holes with the edge of a spackling knife. Apply as needed to the wall, but make sure that you thin out any excess areas. Let dry for twelve hours or more before sanding any rough areas for a smooth finish.

5. Prime the walls. If your walls are bare drywall, or if you are repainting darker walls with a lighter color, then you need to prime your walls before you begin to paint them. You also need to prime the walls when you are going to be using latex paint over walls that have been painted previously with oil based paint.

6. Use the right primer. Water-based paint primers can be used over previously painted walls, as they won’t soak into the walls and cause peeling. Oil-based paint primer soaks in better with the walls and should be used on fresh drywall.

7. Paint the room. Just like when you were a kid, stay within the lines of the room when you’re priming and painting the walls. Get some painter’s tape to outline the windows, door frames, floor boards, and any other areas that you do not want covered with paint. Doing this will give you a smooth line and a nice professional look when you’ve finished.

With a fresh coat of paint, you can truly add a personal touch to any room in your home.
