The filter catches debris such as leaves and algae. There are two types of filters you can use for your pond: a pump filter and a pond filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pump filter<\/strong> &#8211; A pump filter works to hide and protect the pond pump while it removes debris and dirt from the pond&#8217;s surface. These work well for ponds that only have ornamental plants or if you need a pre-filter for your pond pump. If you plan on having fish in your pond, you need a biological filter. A biological filter is made so bacteria can gather and colonize. This helps convert toxic nitrites into nitrates, which are used by plants in your pond.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"keeping-your-pond-filters-clean\">Keeping Your Pond Filters Clean<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Cleaning out the filters is easy, no matter which kind you use in your pond. For biological filters, a simple rinse of the filter bucket should do the trick. Filter mats are usually replaced once a year. The manufacturer or instructions that came with the filter should have a recommended replacement date if you&#8217;re unsure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For mechanical filters, you&#8217;ll need to scoop out any large debris or leaves if they&#8217;re slowing the water flow. Simply scoop out the debris, rinse the bucket with some pond water and put it back in the pond.
