A painted front door can add a pop of color and some easy curbside appeal. Maybe you’re working on a home renovation and need to spruce up a dated look, or maybe you just need to give your doors a fresh, new shine. Whatever the reason, you need to know how to paint a door. Blain’s Farm & Fleet is here to help.

How to Paint a Door

There are two ways to paint a door. You can leave the door on its hinges in the door frame. Just be sure to cover up any hardware with painter’s tape so it doesn’t accidentally get painted. You can also remove the door, take off the hardware, and lay it down on sawhorses. It just depends on how you want to paint the door and how much work space you have.

1. Washing – If you’re painting a finished door, you’ll need to wash the old paint first. Scrub the door with a household degreaser or all-purpose cleaner to get rid of oil and dirt that has built up on the door. This will help the new paint to adhere to the door.

2. Sanding – The next step is sanding. If your door is already painted or stained, you’ll want to sand it so the new paint sticks to the door. If you’re painting bare wood, sanding can help level any wood filler, wood grain, or sharp edges. Use a sanding block or sand paper to sand down the door.

3. Priming – Before you start painting, you’ll need to prime the door. Priming helps cover up stains and dark paint colors. It also helps the new paint adhere to the door. Start by priming the inside panels on the door. Prime the rails (horizontal frames) and then the stiles (the vertical frames). Prime with the grain of the wood using rollers and paint brushes.

4. Painting – Use the same technique for painting as you did for priming. Start with painting the panels with a roller. Paint the molding of the panels with a paint brush. Next, paint the inside cross pieces, and then move on to the rails and the full-length stiles. Finish with the edges of the door. Your door will need about an hour to dry before you can add a second coat of paint. Be sure to pick the appropriate paint–interior, exterior, etc.

At Blain’s Farm & Fleet, you’ll find everything you need for your DIY home projects.
