It’s\u00a0an easy and affordable way to make quick repairs all around your home. With the help of Blain’s Farm & Fleet, you can learn how to fix surface imperfections with wood filler.<\/p>\n

Choosing the Right Wood Filler<\/h3>\n

Stainable<\/a><\/strong> – If you’re going to stain the wood, you’ll need stainable wood filler. The filler can be stained over once it’s dry so the repaired area matches the rest of the wood.<\/p>\n

Filler Sticks<\/strong> – For wood that’s already stained and finished with a top coat, use a crayon-type filler to fill in any holes or cracks. The filler should match the finish of the existing wood.<\/p>\n

Water-Based<\/strong> – For interior surfaces, you’ll need a water-based filler. These fillers are typically used on cabinetry, paneling and molding around the home.<\/p>\n

Use sandpaper<\/a> to smooth rough edges in the work area. Once it’s sanded, clean up any debris with a wet dry vacuum<\/a> or wetted tack cloth. Let the surface completely dry if you use the tack cloth.<\/p>\n

2<\/strong>. Use a putty knife<\/a> to press the wood filler into the hole or crack. Slightly overfill the hole or crack because filler shrinks as it dries. Once the hole is filled in, smooth it over with a clean part of your putty knife.<\/p>\n

3<\/strong>. Let the filler dry for the time specified on the packaging or directions. Once it’s dried up, sand over the filled in area to make the height flush with the rest of the wood.<\/p>\n

4<\/strong>. Once the area is smooth, you can paint over it. You want to make the repair blend in with the rest of the woodwork.<\/p>\n
