Get inspired with these fun DIY welding projects using Diamond Farrier Co. horseshoes.
If you’re a beginner welder, or even a seasoned welder looking for something new to try, a DIY horseshoe decoration may just pique your interest. These projects are relatively inexpensive, simple, and once completed make great additions to your home decor. We have four different projects for you to try. All the supplies you need can be found at your local Blain’s Farm & Fleet. Refer to our project ideas below and watch the videos for step-by-step instructions.
You can decide whether you want to use old or new horseshoes, but keep in mind old ones will require more preparation time. You’ll have to clean them with a steel brush or grinder to remove any dirt or rust that accumulated. Buying new horseshoes eliminates the cleaning time and allows you to pick out the size you prefer. We recommend Diamond Farrier Co. brand horseshoes, which you can find in our stores and online.
For the wine lovers out there, this project allows you to display a bottle of wine and wine glasses on your bar or counter. All you need is seven horse shoes, a welder, a steel brush, a chisel, a hammer, and an anti-rust primer, if desired. However, you must use horseshoes no smaller than a size 0 so that you can fit the wine bottles in the rack.
This project is perfect for adding functional decor to a cabin or a child’s bedroom. It is a little more involved than the previous project, but when the end result is an adorable moose-shaped coat rack, it’ll be worth it.
You’ll need nine horseshoes for this project, and any size horseshoe can be used; this is art, so you can personalize it any way you like. Just be sure to have two washers on hand to use as eyes for the moose! For extra help, Diamond Farrier USA gives step-by-step instructions in this video.
Project #3: Horseshoe Pumpkin
Fall and Halloween are always fun times to decorate your home and yard, especially when you get surrounded by endless amounts of fall-themed decor at any given store. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more unique, try this horseshoe pumpkin project. It’s simple, but adorable, and durable enough to handle the outdoors.
Like the previous project, you can use any size horseshoe you want, depending how big you want your pumpkin, but you’ll need seven of them. You can even take your creativity one step further by painting your project once it’s finished to give your pumpkin some color.
If you’re looking for a piece of art to hang on your wall, try making a heart with wings out of horseshoes. You’ll need about eight horseshoes to complete this project, but there are no restrictions on the horseshoe size you use. Plus, you have the freedom to design the heart and wings however you’d like.
You may paint your final project to add some color, or simply spray it with an anti-rust clear coat primer to enhance its natural color. The route you go with this project is entirely up to you. Just watch the tutorial video and get started.
Additional Project Tips:
Always put safety first; never attempt to work on these projects without the proper safety gear.
Take pride in your work by allotting extra time to clean your welds with a steel brush, chisel and hammer. Your project will look clean and professional, and it’ll prevent anyone from getting hurt on any excess weld splatter.
Don’t restrict yourself. This is art, and there is no right or wrong way to make art, so get creative and take some risks to really personalize your project.
Use the markings and holes on the horseshoes to your advantage. Sometimes it can be difficult to get your project symmetrical, but if you use the holes and markings in the horseshoe as a reference point it can make the job much easier.
Use a level to help your final product stand upright without any issues. There’s nothing more frustrating than finding out your new decoration doesn’t stand upright or look symmetrical after it’s completed.
Always use tag welds before completely welding the project together. This will allow you to make adjustments before fully committing to a position. It’s much easier and quicker to pull apart a tag weld than a piece that has been fully welded together.
Welding is a rewarding hobby that allows you to create beautiful and useful pieces of art. Trying the simple projects we’ve listed above is a great place to start. You can even find all the materials you need at any Blain’s Farm & Fleet store as well as more welding guides and project How-To’s on our welding blog. All you need to do now is to start your welder and begin making art.
